Scenic Construction & Textile Fabrication

For Anjali Dance Company's production 49 Trees, Big House created a large sculptural tree combining scenic construction, specialist finishes and bespoke textile work.

Beginning with a scale model, the design was developed into a full size scenic structure in the Big House workshop. The tree required a combination of fabrication, textured finishes and detailed scenic painting, with layers of individually created textile foliage adding movement, colour and atmosphere to the finished piece.

Bringing the different elements together called on a range of workshop skills, from interpreting the original design and developing the construction approach through to fabrication, finishing and final assembly.

The finished tree formed part of 49 Trees, an outdoor dance production exploring our relationship with trees and the natural world.

The project is a great example of how scenic construction can bring together different materials, crafts and techniques to transform a creative concept into a physical structure for live performance.
