Interactive Scenic Construction

Big House created this colourful pirate ship installation for the Edinburgh International Book Festival, transforming sheets of plywood into an imaginative space designed for children to climb, explore and play.

Built in the Big House workshop, the finished structure featured bold painted details, striped masts and a giant octopus, bringing the playful design to life while creating a robust installation suitable for interaction with young visitors.

The project combined scenic construction, fabrication and detailed finishing with the practical considerations involved in creating an interactive public installation.

It is a great example of how scenic construction can be used beyond the stage, creating immersive environments that encourage curiosity, storytelling and a little bit of make-believe.
